Community Life

Our proud community reflects the high regard we have for our region and our way of life..

Our schools are staffed by dedicated professionals. The first year that Kentucky teachers were eligible for bonuses due to improving their schools, teachers in the local school systems shared more than $300,000 in merit bonuses. In fact, the Science Hill Independent School System received the State’s highest reward for their improvement.

Our low cost of living is due in part to extremely low gas and utility rates. Because Somerset and Pulaski County is a regional center, we have a large variety of grocery, department and specialty stores.

Residents have access to a wide variety of recreational opportunities. They can enjoy five 18 hole golf courses, miles of wilderness trails for hiking and streams for canoeing, or high power jet skiing and houseboating on Lake Cumberland.

Community Sidewalk

The outlying communities of Burnside, Ferguson, Eubank, Science Hill and Nancy each offer unique small town charm.

Somerset is proud of its heritage and offers a walking tour of its historic properties. Every fall Somerfest is celebrated on Fountain Square and through the downtown streets.

Health care is a priority. Somerset is home to the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, a 227 bed facility with more than 60 doctors on staff.  A large medical park with a wide variety of specialists and clinics support the hospital.

A progressive arts rebirth has taken place in the community, and a wide array of cultural activities are available. Lake Cumberland Performing Arts Series routinely brings in nationally known touring performers. Watershed Arts Alliance works to advance local artists and is active in school programs.  The Master Musicians Festival is a four-day event every summer that spans the genres of classical, blues, jazz, country, folk and gospel music. Pulaski County Public Library is fully computerized and has three branches throughout the county.
